Heya <<First Name>>,
We just published a really strange book.
By all the usual measures, “Word Things” is a completely bad idea.
No story.
No pictures.
No clearly defined audience.
No color (aside from a splash of red on the cover).
To be honest, I’m thinking that the only copies we’re likely to sell are to friends and family.
Here’s a sample page (see what I mean?):
Somehow it makes us really happy
And yet …
I LOVE this little book and I am completely delighted that it exists in the world — even if I can’t articulate why.
I mention this for two reasons:
- To give you a heads-up. There are loads of conventional kids-book publishers. That’s not us. The world is weird and wonderful, and we’re going to celebrate it with love and irreverence.
- To give you a thumbs-up. Maybe you (or your kiddo) have some idea you want to bring into the world and the voices around you are “shouting their bad advice” (as the poet Mary Oliver wrote). That’s not us. We say, “Do it! Do your weird and wonderful thing.” The doing itself is its own reward.
Have a wonderful week!
Oh, if you need to satisfy a morbid sense of curiosity, you can download a copy “Word Things” for free here.
Happy reading!
Jeff, Bob, and Zoe … … who believe that reading with kids can change the world for the better
PS. For any friends and family reading this email: You can buy a Kindle version of “Word Things” or the physical book. Thanks for keeping us in coffee. |
