Heya <<First Name>>,
Bob and I had a wonderful conversation last week with literacy expert Frank Serafini.
Frank is a former elementary school teacher, current college professor, and the author of both professional development books and a series of non-fiction picture books that feature his nature photographs.
(I don’t know about you, but after I read something like that, I start to seriously question my own time-management choices. Anyway … )
Here are three highlights of our conversation:
- Read aloud to your kids through high school. It’ll help with test prep (and many other things that are more important).
- Read nonfiction, too. Frank told us about a boy whose preferred read-alouds were brochures from auto dealers.
- Have fun! Think “Stinky Cheese Man” and “The Book with No Pictures.”
When he mentioned the bit about making read-aloud fun, I got way too excited and shared a quote from the beloved Australian children’s book author Mem Fox. She’s written that with read-aloud …
“Entertainment IS the teacher.”
Frank then told Bob and me he’s been selected for a Mem Fox Visiting Research Fellowship at the University of South Australia.
Serendipity. …
Happy reading,
Jeff and Bob … … who believe that reading with kids can change the world for the better |
