Heya <<First Name>>,
Last week, a woman wrote and mentioned that she’s reading “The Lord of the Rings” to her son.
And that it’s kind of a tough go at times.
Since I’m reading that book right now, I totally get it. I mean, I love the trilogy, but there are times when I find myself hoping some orcs will pop in and liven up some of the longer descriptive passages.
Anyway, her note reminded me of “The Princess Bride,” which I read for the first time a few months ago. The conceit of the book is that the father (not the grandfather, as it is in the movie) who reads the book to his son only reads the good parts.
Indeed, the full title of the first edition is: “The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern’s Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure. The Good Parts Version, Abridged by William Goldman.”
Anyway, the point is:
It’s okay to skip the boring bits.
Happy reading,
